Comp Lab – Holocaust Photo Project

COPY and PASTE the link below to help you start your research:

http://www.ushmm.org/research/collections/photo/

The following is a copy of your handout, good luck!

Step 1:

Choose a photo from the archives:

http://www.ushmm.org/research/collections/photo/

Click on “Search Online Catalog” and on the search engine (using search terms like “family” or “birthday”) begin looking for just the right photo that meets the following requirements:

REQUIREMENTS FOR PHOTO

ü  Common theme: If you have a baby picture in your personal collections than you need to find a baby picture in the archives. In the examples above, (left hand side) the common theme is children in a park and (right hand side) the common theme is grandparents/the elderly.

ü  Before German Occupation: You are looking at how life was for the Jews before the Nazis invaded and conquered the territory of your selected photo.

Quick Reference: This is not the ultimate list, if you find a country that is not listed then you need to research when German occupied the territory.

Germany 1933, Poland 1939, Austria 1938, Hungary 1940, Czechoslovakia 1938, Denmark 1940, Netherlands 1939

ü  Photo Information: You need to find a photo that meets the above requirements and has enough information to write about. You will find that some photos have little information about the people in the photograph- try to avoid these pictures because it will make it more difficult for you for Step 2.

ü  Final Arrangement: Once you’ve selected your photo from the archive and your personal photo that meets the all the requirements, you will arrange both photos so that they are side-by-side on a blank sheet of paper.

**Helpful Hint** You may want to copy and paste your selected archive photo on a word document and change the size and align it to your liking.

STEP 2:

REQUIREMENTS FOR WRITTEN RESPONSE

ü  Answer the questions on the back, “Holocaust Photo Analysis Sheet”

ü  On a separate sheet of paper, answer the following questions with the help of notes from the back:

Before the war, how were the lives of Jews “normal”? Explain how Jewish life can be viewed as ordinary and how their lives were changed after Nazi occupation.

ü  1 pg, double-spaced, 12 font, Times Roman – or – 1 ¾ page, neatly written, double-spaced, ink
