Freshman Computer Lab Assignment

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

The purpose for today is to get you familiar with the free resources available for you to do research. Most of the websites that you will be visiting are only available when you are on a school computer because they are paid websites. LAUSD pays lots of money to have these resources open to students and it’s your job to take advantage of this opportunity.

Step 1 Open a new window by going to “File” at the top of your screen, and click on “New Window.” You should have one window with the class website and the other to do your research and browsing. I will not help you until you have two windows open! You will find questions that you will need to answer and turn in at the end of the period.

Step 2 – Copy and paste link into the new window you opened up: www.lausd.net

Point your mouse on the “Resources” link found on the top of the page and choose “Student Resources.” This is a page dedicated to give your information about school, careers, and future planning. Click on the link that says “Open LAUSD’s Digital Library”

Question : What resources are available in the digital library? Name all the resources available under “Subscription Sites”

Step 4 – Visit at least six websites. Explore what each website offers and what is their expertise.

Question: Of the six website you visited, describe 4 websites. Tell me what is the title of the website, the topic of the website, and how can it help students. (3-4 sentence summary)

Step 5 – Click on Britannica Online and search for “Antarctica” in the search engine. Looking at the Compton Encyclopedia (the column in the middle) read the article of “Exploration and History” and “International Relations”

Question: Give a brief summary of what you read. Before your begin your summary, make sure you have the title of the article you read. (3-4 sentence summary)

Step 6: Copy and paste the link to browser: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/crittercam/antarctica/

Click on the click that says “Enter the Artic” and explore!

Question: What are three species that live in Antarctica? Give the name and two facts about them. If you want, also include a small picture!

Because computers and technology will be a part of your life, it’s very important that you learn to type. If you already know, practice to get better!
